How it works
A match-three game lets you swap any two pieces; Tetris gives you one piece but wants a whole line. Gemtris takes the falling piece from one and the three-in-a-row from the other, and that combination changes what the board is for: you open on a field of fruit you did not choose, so the first drop is already a move in somebody else's game. Clearing takes individual fruit rather than whole rows, so what sits above a gap falls into it and can land in a run of its own — which means the drops worth setting up are the ones you do not finish yourself.
